The Race & Media Conference at the University of Wisconsin-Madison brings together a vibrant collective of established and emerging scholars at the intersection of critical race theory and media studies. Together, we recognize that racial difference, racialized identities, and racism play a critical role in structuring media production and consumption. Yet prevailing rhetorics of postracism, combined with an increasing threat to ethnic studies and other academic programs that focus on race, have weakened our ability to call attention to this important subject. At this conference we seek to reinvigorate a conversation about the complex relationship between race and the media and center this overlapping set of concerns.
